In a bizarre incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, a woman named Chohari Devi received a payment receipt for Rs 197 crore, despite her actual electricity bill amounting to Rs 4,950. The confusion arose when her son went to pay the electricity bill, and instead of receiving a receipt for the correct amount, he was handed a payment receipt for the staggering sum of Rs 197 crore.
The error was traced back to the electricity operator, who mistakenly copied and pasted the 10-digit connection ID into the column designated for the bill amount. The discrepancy came to light when senior officials in Lucknow were alerted to the anomaly.
Upon discovering the mistake, authorities promptly cancelled the payment under the guidance of the data centre located at Shakti Bhawan in Lucknow. Ashu Kalia, the Chief Engineer of Gorakhpur Distribution, clarified that the inconvenience was the result of a typographical error. He assured that the receipt had been corrected, addressing the unusual incident caused by a simple but significant mistake.
