In response to the detection of a new variant of Covid-19 in Kerala, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced on Monday that masks will be mandatory for individuals aged 60 and above, as well as those with heart conditions and respiratory issues. The Karnataka Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee is set to convene on Tuesday to assess the impact of the newly identified JN.1 subvariant.

Rao reassured the public that the health department will issue new guidelines related to Covid-19, and there is no need for alarm. He mentioned having held discussions with health department officials and highlighted the committee’s recommendation to mandate masks for senior citizens and individuals with heart and respiratory ailments.

Emphasizing proactive measures, Rao stated that the health department has been instructed to ramp up testing and ensure readiness with hospital beds, oxygen cylinders, PPE kits, and other essential materials. Stringent measures have been implemented at the Karnataka-Kerala border, including mandatory Covid-19 testing for individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough. The government aims to address the situation promptly and efficiently to mitigate the potential impact of the new variant in the region.
