Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized Union Minister Smriti Irani for her comments on the LGBTQIA+ community. Chaturvedi called Irani’s remarks “shocking and insensitive” and highlighted the minister’s apparent lack of understanding of the LGBTQIA+ umbrella term, which includes transgender individuals, some of whom menstruate. The criticism stems from Irani’s response during an interview where she questioned why she was asked about providing menstrual hygiene for gay men.
Chaturvedi emphasized that Irani’s attitude toward an issue affecting many people’s lived experiences was shameful. The Shiv Sena leader’s comments were made in response to Irani’s reaction to a question in Parliament about promoting and providing menstrual hygiene among the LGBTQIA+ community. Irani had questioned the relevance of the inquiry, specifically referencing gay men and menstrual cycles.
Several Opposition leaders, including Priyanka Chaturvedi and Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, condemned Irani’s statements. Shrinate clarified that LGBTQIA+ encompasses men and menstruating women, urging Irani to educate herself on the matter. The criticism also touched upon Irani’s previous stance against paid menstruation leave, where she argued that menstruation is a natural part of women’s lives and not a handicap deserving paid leave.
The controversy highlights the need for a more inclusive and informed approach to LGBTQIA+ issues, with leaders calling for greater awareness and sensitivity on such matters.
