In a fashion-forward move, Air India launched its latest collection of uniforms designed by renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra. The new uniforms, set to be gradually introduced in the coming months, will first make their appearance with the entry of Air India’s inaugural Airbus A350 aircraft.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director at Air India, expressed confidence in Manish Malhotra’s designs, stating, “Air India’s crew uniforms are amongst the world’s most storied in aviation history, and we firmly believe that Manish Malhotra’s innovative ensemble will script an exciting new chapter for Air India’s future narrative.”
The female cabin crew uniforms showcase a ready-to-wear ombre saree featuring intricate patterns inspired by Indian heritage architecture (jharokha) and the Vista, the new Air India logo icon. Paired with a comfortable blouse and blazer, the design perfectly captures the essence of the airline’s new identity.
Manish Malhotra, the designer behind the transformation, shared his vision for the uniforms, stating, “My aim was to create uniforms that capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while also embodying a modern and sophisticated look.” He further emphasized the use of quintessential hues symbolic to India, aiming to make the crew feel proud and leave a lasting impression on guests, reflecting India’s warmth and hospitality.
The uniform designs emerged from a collaborative effort involving cabin crew representatives and the airline’s In-flight services team, ensuring thorough testing for suitability and functionality. The cockpit crew’s uniform, in contrast, features a traditional black double-breasted suit adorned with a Vista-inspired print, symbolizing professionalism, timeless elegance, and the esteemed nature of the aviation profession.
As Air India embraces this stylish makeover, the new uniforms not only signify a fresh identity for the airline but also contribute to the rich history of aviation fashion.
