The emergence of the JN.1 Covid variant in India has sparked concerns, with 2669 new active cases reported in 24 hours, particularly in states like Kerala, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Karnataka. The Union Health Ministry notes an uptick in cases and attributes it to the new sub-variant. As of now, 21 cases of JN.1 have been recorded in India, with two Covid-19-related deaths reported in Karnataka. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasizes that the pandemic is not over and urges states to monitor and respond appropriately.
Hospitals nationwide are on high alert, conducting COVID tests, and closely monitoring the situation. In Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, a 41-year-old has tested positive for JN.1. Kerala reported 300 new cases and three deaths, while West Bengal continues surveillance as per central guidelines. The Centre reassures that JN.1 is not an immediate concern, but states like Haryana, Delhi, and Karnataka are taking precautionary measures, including issuing advisories, conducting RT-PCR tests, and reviewing healthcare facilities.
Gujarat and Goa remain vigilant, with mock drills assessing hospital preparedness. Odisha reports no new cases, Rajasthan sees two fresh cases, and the World Health Organization classifies JN.1 as a “variant of interest.” The Indian Council of Medical Research is actively working on genome sequencing for the new JN.1 variant. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the evolving nature of the virus, demanding continued vigilance and responsive public health measures.
