The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted relief from the scorching heatwave conditions across the country this week. IMD scientist Soma Sen announced on Thursday that the heatwave is expected to subside, with only West Rajasthan remaining under its grip, warranting a yellow alert due to minimal anticipated impact.

Despite this respite, thunderstorm activity is on the rise across several states, particularly in Rajasthan, where temperatures have soared above 41°C. The IMD had earlier warned of escalating temperatures in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Bharatpur divisions, with some districts already surpassing the blistering 44°C mark.
The influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal is fueling thunderstorm activity nationwide, with the potential for cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. To combat rising temperatures, authorities in Delhi have inaugurated a heat stroke unit at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, equipped to provide immediate treatment to patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s Alappuzha district has also been placed on yellow alert for heatwave conditions. The IMD projects maximum temperatures ranging from 36 to 39 degrees Celsius across various districts of the state until May 10, signaling continued heat discomfort for residents.
As the weather pattern shifts towards thunderstorms and lower temperatures, authorities and citizens alike remain vigilant, ensuring preparedness to mitigate the impact of both extreme heat and adverse weather conditions.
