Veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani expressed his gratitude and humility in response to being conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on Saturday. In an official statement, Advani acknowledged the honor not only as a personal achievement but also as recognition for the ideals and principles he has steadfastly upheld throughout his life.
Advani’s statement read, “With utmost humility and gratitude, I accept the ‘Bharat Ratna’ that has been conferred on me today. It is not only an honour for me as a person, but also for the ideals and principles that I have strove to serve throughout my life to the best of my ability.”
The veteran BJP leader recounted his journey, emphasizing his early involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a volunteer. He stated, “Ever since I joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as its volunteer…. I have sought reward in only one thing – in dedicated and selfless service to my beloved country in whatever task life assigned to me.”
Lal Krishna Advani, a key figure in the BJP, played a pivotal role in elevating the party to national prominence through his Rath Yatra advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya during the early 1990s. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Advani, highlighting his monumental contributions to India’s development and describing him as one of the most esteemed statesmen.
During the announcement of the Bharat Ratna for Advani, Prime Minister Modi praised his multifaceted role in Indian politics, serving as the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister, and I&B Minister. Advani’s journey in politics began when he became a member of the RSS at the age of fourteen in 1941. He later joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, the political precursor to the BJP.
Advani’s political career saw significant milestones, including his initiation of the Ram Rath Yatra in 1990, advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The Rath Yatra played a crucial role in catapulting the BJP to prominence, making it the second-largest party in the parliament after the Congress in the 1991 general elections.
The Bharat Ratna for LK Advani reflects not only his individual accomplishments but also symbolizes the acknowledgment of his unwavering commitment to the principles he holds dear. As India celebrates his contributions, Advani’s legacy stands as a testament to a life dedicated to the service of the nation.
