In a significant development, three terrorists, including a wanted member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Basit Dar, were neutralized in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir. The operation, which commenced on the night of May 6 and lasted for nearly 40 hours, concluded on Thursday morning, as per the Indian Army.
A joint operation by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir police was launched following intense gunfire in the Redwani Payeen area. Basit Dar, a notorious figure involved in multiple criminal activities including attacks on police personnel and civilians, was among the terrorists eliminated in the encounter. He had a notorious track record, with his involvement in over 18 cases, including civilian killings and planning attacks on minorities.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had previously announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for information leading to Basit Dar’s capture, citing his alleged involvement in the killing of two non-local laborers in Kulgam in 2021. The successful neutralization of Dar marks a significant blow to the terror network in the region.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, terrorists targeted an Indian Air Force convoy in Poonch district, resulting in the death of one IAF personnel and injuries to four others. Although no terror group claimed responsibility, the attackers displayed a sophisticated understanding of the terrain, indicating a concerning level of local support.
As security forces continue to confront terrorist threats in the region, such operations underscore the unwavering commitment of the Indian Army and its allies to maintain peace and security in Kashmir.
