Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal criticized a perceived disconnect between Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent remarks and the actions of the BJP-led government, which enjoys support from the Hindutva organization. Speaking on October 13, 2024, a day after Bhagwat’s Vijayadashami address, Sibal expressed concerns over what he sees as discrepancies between the RSS chief’s message and the government’s policies.
During his speech on October 12, 2024, Bhagwat highlighted India’s growing global strength and credibility but warned of “sinister conspiracies” aimed at testing the country’s resolve. He also spoke about the divisions within Indian society, including those based on religion and language, and emphasized the need for unity and harmony. He urged Hindus to celebrate Valmiki Diwas, recognizing the contributions of Saint Valmiki, who wrote the Ramayana.
Reacting to Bhagwat’s statements, Sibal welcomed the call for unity but questioned the RSS’s silence when divisive incidents occur. He pointed out that, since 2014, there have been increasing societal divisions, with minorities facing targeted actions and incidents such as bulldozer operations. “Why does the RSS not raise questions when such incidents happen?” Sibal asked during a press conference in New Delhi.
The former Union Minister emphasized the gap between Bhagwat’s message of harmony and the government’s actions, suggesting that the policies implemented under the BJP’s rule contradict the values expressed in the RSS chief’s speech. Sibal urged the RSS to hold the government accountable for policies and actions that, in his view, do not align with the message of unity conveyed by Bhagwat.
