An interesting story of Mahashivratri associated with Nishadaraj
According to the Garuda Purana, once Nishadaraj went out hunting with his pet dog. Despite roaming in the forest for a long time, they do not find any prey. They get tired and are debilitated by hunger and thirst. They sit near a pond, the tree they sit under is a bilva tree. There was also a Shivling near the lake. To relax his body, Nishadaraj broke some bilva leaves. Some of which also fell on Shivlinga. He took water from the lake to wash his feet. The water taken in Khoba also fell on Shivlinga. Meanwhile one of his arrows fell, which he bent down to pick up. Thus he worshiped Lord Shiva on Shivratri unknowingly.

After death, when Yamaduta came to fetch him, the ganas of Shiva protected him and chased him away. It is believed that when unknowingly worshiping Lord Shiva on Mahashivratri gives such results, how much more fruitful will it be to worship the Lord knowingly and consciously.

While another legend has it that on this day Mother Parvatiji performed severe penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband. Being pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva married Parvati. That is why Mahashivratri is considered sacred.
