Following the recent moves by Vietnam, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, Malaysia has now announced the elimination of entry visa requirements for Indian citizens starting from December 1. This decision, revealed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, is part of Malaysia’s strategy to bolster its tourism industry, with Indians and Chinese comprising a significant portion of global tourists.
Indian nationals will be permitted to stay visa-free in Malaysia for up to 30 days, as outlined by Anwar during a speech at his People’s Justice Party’s annual congress in Putrajaya. However, this exemption is contingent upon security screening.
With an eye on stimulating economic growth, Malaysia is banking on increased tourist arrivals and their subsequent spending. Anwar had previously disclosed plans to enhance visa facilities next year, aiming to attract tourists and investors, particularly from India and China.

Vietnam is also contemplating visa-free entry for Indians and Chinese. Presently, nationals from several European countries can travel to Vietnam without a visa. Additionally, Vietnam is offering e-visas with a 90-day validity and multiple entry allowances for individuals from various countries.
Thailand, in a similar vein, announced a six-month period of visa-free entry for tourists from India and Taiwan, effective from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. The decision was justified by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavision, citing the strong inclination of people from India and Taiwan to travel to Thailand.
Sri Lanka, too, has joined the trend by approving the issuance of free visas to individuals from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. This initiative, introduced as a pilot project until March 31, 2024, is part of Sri Lanka’s efforts to encourage tourism and economic activity.
In summary, these countries are revising their visa policies to facilitate easier travel for tourists, particularly from major source countries like India and China, aiming to drive economic growth through increased tourism.
