Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant visit to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh to partake in the ‘Mirabai Janmotsav,’ an event organized to commemorate the 525th birth anniversary of the revered mystic poet and devotee of Lord Krishna, Mirabai. During this visit, PM Modi also offered prayers at the Krishna Janmabhoomi, marking the first time a Prime Minister has done so in 32 years.
At the ‘Saint Mirabai Janmotsav’ program, PM Modi highlighted the unique connection between Braj and Gujarat, expressing that Mathura’s Kanha became Dwarkadheesh after moving to Gujarat. He emphasized the integral role of Saint Mirabai in the region, stating, “Saint Mira Bai, who came to Mathura from Rajasthan, spent her last moments in Dwarka. Saint Mira’s worship is incomplete without Vrindavan.” PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to witness ‘Braj,’ emphasizing that only those called by ‘Shri Krishna and Shriji’ have the privilege of visiting.
The Prime Minister acknowledged India’s tradition of worshipping women, citing Sant Meera Bai as an exemplary figure who not only assumed responsibilities but also guided society. PM Modi released a commemorative stamp and coin in honor of Mirabai, initiating a series of year-long programs dedicated to her memory. The event featured a cultural program, a 5-minute documentary on Mirabai, and a dance drama presented by Mathura MP Hema Malini.
Mirabai, renowned for her unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna, composed numerous hymns and verses that continue to resonate today. The occasion was attended by prominent dignitaries, including UP Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and both Deputy Chief Ministers.
Security in Mathura was tight, with the city divided into eight zones and 32 sectors. The road from the Army Helipad to Lord Krishna’s birthplace was adorned with colorful lights to welcome the Prime Minister. Stringent security measures, including barricading and snipers deployed on rooftops, were implemented to ensure the smooth passage of PM Modi’s convoy.
During his visit, PM Modi issued a postal stamp on Mirabai and a coin with a denomination of Rs 525. The Brajraj festival venue had seating arrangements for 5,000 people. The grand welcome extended to PM Modi reflected the significance of the occasion and the respect accorded to the Prime Minister’s visit to the birthplace of Lord Krishna after a gap of 32 years.
