PM Modi on US’s Pannun’s murder plot claim, Suspended MPs tally now 143

In response to the United States’ allegations of an Indian government employee’s involvement in a murder plot targeting separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has affirmed that India will thoroughly investigate the claims. Emphasizing that isolated incidents will not adversely impact the relationship between the United States and India, Modi signaled a commitment to addressing the allegations.

Last month, the US Justice Department accused an Indian government official of orchestrating an unsuccessful plot to assassinate Pannun on American soil. Subsequently, charges were announced against Indian national Nikhil Gupta, who stands accused of planning the alleged murder.

Simultaneously, the deadlock between the Opposition and the government escalated as Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee’s mimicry of Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, recorded on a mobile camera by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, deepened tensions. Dhankar, union ministers, and BJP MPs condemned the act. Gandhi, in response, criticized the media for allegedly downplaying the suspension of Opposition MPs and focusing on the video controversy. Two additional Opposition MPs were suspended for unruly behavior on Wednesday, bringing the total number of suspended MPs to 143. Meanwhile, an activist filed a complaint with the Ethics Committee of Parliament, seeking the expulsion of MPs involved in mocking Dhankar. The political landscape remains charged as these events continue to unfold.
