Pune Teen Driver’s Father Had Elaborate Escape Plan. How He Was Caught

A prominent Pune realtor orchestrated an elaborate escape plan after his 17-year-old son’s late-night drunken Porsche drive resulted in the deaths of two 24-year-old engineers. Following an FIR against him for allowing his son to drive the luxury car, the realtor went on the run. To mislead the police, he left home in one car towards Mumbai, had another car head to Goa, and switched to a friend’s car en route to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). He also started using a new SIM card to avoid tracking.

Despite these efforts, police tracked the friend’s car through its GPS and identified the realtor using CCTV footage. He was eventually arrested during a late-night raid at a lodge in Sambhajinagar and will be presented in court today.

The Porsche crash occurred on Saturday night and caused national outrage when the teenager was granted bail within 15 hours. The bail conditions, which included writing a 300-word essay on accidents, working with traffic police for 15 days, and undergoing counseling for his drinking habit, were widely criticized as insufficient.

Police have requested the juvenile justice board’s permission to try the 17-year-old, who is eight months shy of adulthood, as an adult. A decision on this plea is expected today.

Victims Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshtha, both IT engineers from Madhya Pradesh, were returning from a get-together on a bike when the Porsche, allegedly speeding at 200 km/h, hit them from behind, killing them instantly. The victims’ families have condemned the swift bail and described the incident as a “murder, not an accident.” The teen and his friends were returning from a pub at the time of the accident. Police have also arrested the owners and a staff member of two establishments for serving alcohol to the minor.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told NDTV that they are building a “watertight case” with technical and corroborative evidence to ensure the accused is punished under the relevant sections of the law.
