In a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the crucial role of journalists in educating the public about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and the emergence of deepfake technology. He expressed concern over the misuse of AI in creating deceptive deepfakes and urged the media to raise awareness about this growing crisis.

During the BJP’s Diwali Milan programme at the party’s headquarters in Delhi, Modi referenced a recent deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna. The video, suspected to be generated using AI technology, had Mandanna’s face digitally inserted into content originally belonging to a British-Indian influencer. Modi pointed out that such deepfakes can be misleading, emphasizing the need for the media to play a proactive role in addressing this issue.

The Indian government, responding to the rise of deepfakes and their potential for spreading misinformation, issued an advisory to major social media platforms. The advisory urged swift action against deepfakes and the removal of misleading content within 36 hours of a complaint. Despite these measures, concerns remain about the adequacy of existing regulations pertaining to AI and deepfake technology.

Modi reiterated his commitment to transforming India into a developed nation, emphasizing that these aspirations are not mere words but tangible realities. He also highlighted the strong support for the ‘vocal for local’ initiative, showcasing the unity of the people behind this cause. Expressing pride in India’s achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi instilled confidence in the populace, asserting that the nation is on an unwavering path of progress.

Recognizing the significance of Chhath Puja, Modi declared it a ‘rashtriya parva’ (national festival), bringing great joy to the nation. The Chhath Puja festivities, spanning from November 17 to November 20, hold special importance and are celebrated nationwide.

At the end, Prime Minister Modi not only highlighted the concerns surrounding deepfake technology but also emphasized the government’s commitment to national development. The ‘vocal for local‘ initiative and India’s achievements during the pandemic were showcased as signs of the nation’s progress. Additionally, Modi acknowledged the cultural significance of Chhath Puja, declaring it a national festival.
