“Supreme Court Upholds Abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir After Four-Year Legal Battle”
After four years since its implementation, the Supreme Court has affirmed the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir. The five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, delivered the verdict on Monday, December 11, upholding the removal of special status in the region.
Preparations are underway in Jammu and Kashmir to manage potential tensions as the Supreme Court’s decision is awaited. Political leaders nationwide continue to express their views on the matter, with the opposition advocating for the reinstatement of Article 370, which granted special status to the region.
Numerous petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which bifurcated the state into two union territories, were referred to a Constitution bench in 2019.
The five-judge bench, consisting of CJI Chandrachud, justices S K Kaul, Sanjeev Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, heard arguments from petitioners and the Centre for 16 days. The apex court had reserved its verdict on September 5, announcing the decision on December 11.
