The decision was revealed by Singh’s legal counsel, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, who claimed to have met Singh in Dibrugarh central jail and persuaded him to enter the electoral fray in the interest of the ‘Khalsa Panth’. Khalsa stated that Singh, the chief of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, agreed to contest the elections as an Independent candidate to serve the Sikh community.

However, Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, initially expressed surprise at the news, asserting that his son had never shown any prior inclination towards politics. He refrained from making further comments until after meeting his son the following day.

Amritpal Singh’s entry into politics comes against the backdrop of his arrest last year in April, along with nine of his associates, after the Punjab Police invoked the NSA against them. Singh, known for his association with the deceased Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended following a manhunt in Moga’s Rode village. His arrest was preceded by the February 23 Ajnala incident, where Singh and his supporters clashed with police at a station on the outskirts of Amritsar, demanding the release of one of his aides.

Singh and his associates face multiple charges, including attempts to murder, attacks on police personnel, and creating public disturbances. Despite being detained in Dibrugarh jail, Singh’s influence appears undiminished, as evidenced by his decision to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

The news of Singh’s candidacy has stirred up mixed reactions, with some lauding his commitment to the Sikh cause, while others express concerns about his controversial past and potential impact on regional stability. As the political landscape in Punjab braces for this unexpected development, all eyes are on Khadoor Sahib constituency to witness how Singh’s entry into electoral politics will unfold and whether it will have any significant ramifications in the upcoming elections.

Sharing his experience on X, PM Modi expressed his awe at the lush greenery and diverse flora and fauna, including the majestic one-horned rhinoceros that graces Kaziranga National Park. He encouraged everyone to witness the unparalleled beauty of the landscapes and experience the warmth of the people of Assam, emphasizing the unique charm of this natural haven.

However, the excitement of the safari was not without its logistical implications. To accommodate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, the Kaziranga Range of Kohora temporarily suspended jeep safaris and elephant rides from March 7 to 9. A notice from Arun Vignesh, Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, informed visitors about the temporary unavailability of these activities during the specified period.

Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to unveil the towering ‘Statue of Valour,’ a 125-ft tribute to the renowned Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, in Jorhat. The Prime Minister will then proceed to Meleng Meteli Pothar in the Jorhat district to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for a multitude of central and state projects, totaling an impressive ₹18,000 crore. A public address at the venue will further highlight the significance of these initiatives.

The Prime Minister’s extensive tour continues from March 8 to 10, encompassing visits to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. On March 8, he will commence his visit to Assam, with an early-morning visit to Kaziranga National Park on March 9. The day unfolds with his participation in the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit North East’ program in Itanagar at 10:30 AM, where he will inaugurate the Sela Tunnel and launch the UNNATI scheme, valued at around ₹10,000 crore.

The day’s agenda extends to Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, where PM Modi will inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stone for various development projects totaling approximately ₹55,600 crore.

Concluding the day’s events, the Prime Minister returns to Jorhat at around 12:15 PM to unveil the impressive statue of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, participating in a public program and inaugurating diverse development projects in Assam, valued at over ₹17,500 crore.

Taking a major step towards the northeastern states, the central government has decided to regionalize the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. This special law will now be limited to certain areas of these states. There has been a long-standing demand for the removal of this law from the North-Eastern states.

However, instead of doing away with it completely, the Center has decided to limit it to some disturbed areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has welcomed this decision of the government. He said the decision would usher in a new era of peace and prosperity in the North-Eastern states which have been suffering from decades of neglect.

Not only there have been repeated protests in the north-eastern states on the issue of AFSPA, in some states this issue has also been made a political issue. But now the central government is reducing the AFSPA in the area, there will be relief on many issues at once.
