In a world still grappling with the ongoing battle against COVID-19 and the emergence of its variants, a new potential threat has surfaced, this time in the form of ancient viruses, aptly referred to as “zombie viruses,” that lie dormant in the Arctic permafrost. The concern is that global warming could unleash these Methuselah microbes, posing a risk of disease outbreaks or even a pandemic. Researchers have already isolated strains of these zombie viruses, raising fears of a global medical emergency triggered not by a novel disease but by one resurrected from the distant past, as reported by The Guardian.

Virologist Marion Koopmans from the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the viruses hidden in the permafrost. “We don’t know what viruses are lying out there in the permafrost, but I think there is a real risk that there might be one capable of triggering a disease outbreak – say of an ancient form of polio. We have to assume that something like this could happen,” warned Koopmans.

The discovery of Methuselah microbes, or zombie viruses, is not a recent revelation. In 2023, genomicist Jean-Michel Claverie and materials scientist Chantal Abergel identified permafrost megaviruses, one dating back an astonishing 48,500 years. In 2014, researchers from Aix-Marseille University made history by isolating viruses from ancient permafrost, underscoring the potential threat hidden beneath the frozen layers of the Earth.

Permafrost, characterized by soil and sediment that remains frozen for extended periods, typically at least two consecutive years, is prevalent in cold regions like the Arctic and Antarctic. This frozen terrain contains a mix of ice, soil, and organic matter, playing a vital role in preserving ancient plant and animal remains. However, the rising global temperatures pose a direct threat to permafrost, leading to its thawing. This, in turn, releases stored carbon and methane, contributing to the vicious cycle of climate change.

While the world grapples with the unforeseen threat from zombie viruses, another concern looms on the horizon. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disease causing inflammation and joint damage, has recently sparked interest due to its potential link to an increased risk of developing lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

RA is rooted in the immune system mistakenly attacking the body’s tissues, especially the joints, leading to chronic inflammation. This persistent immune system activation and dysfunction have raised questions about a potential connection to an elevated risk of lymphoma. The intricate relationship involves various factors, including immune system dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and the use of specific medications in RA treatment.

As the world navigates through these dual concerns – the hidden threats beneath the thawing permafrost and the intricate relationship between autoimmune diseases like RA and lymphoma – the importance of ongoing research and global collaboration becomes more apparent. The unpredictable nature of these challenges underscores the need for proactive measures, both in mitigating climate change impacts and understanding the intricate dynamics of autoimmune disorders, ensuring that humanity remains prepared for any unforeseen challenges that may arise from the depths of our planet or within our own bodies.

In the last 24 hours, Karnataka reported 173 fresh cases of Covid-19 along with two coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total number of active cases in the state to 702, according to the health bulletin. The recent surge has pushed the total Covid-19 related deaths in the state to over 10. In the same period, 37 patients were discharged, and a total of 8,349 tests were conducted, comprising 6,400 RTPCR and 1,949 Rapid Antigen tests. The positivity rate is at 2.07%, and the case fatality rate stands at 1.15%.

Bengaluru recorded the maximum number of tests, with 82 out of 2,616 tests returning positive results, making it the district with the highest number of cases in the state. The victims of the reported deaths were aged 59 and 69, both admitted in Bengaluru Urban district and presented symptoms of fever and cough.

As of the latest update, the total active cases in the state are 702, with 649 individuals in home isolation and the remaining 53 hospitalized. In response to the spike in cases and the detection of JN.1 infections, the Karnataka government’s cabinet sub-committee on coronavirus issued advisories, urging people to wear masks, refrain from sending symptomatic children to schools, and adhere to COVID-appropriate behavior, including social distancing and seven days of home isolation for infected patients.

To address the situation, the government has also decided to administer a “precautionary vaccine” for the elderly and those with comorbidities. Additionally, the state plans to acquire 30,000 doses of the Corbevax vaccine from the Centre for this purpose.

On Tuesday, Karnataka’s Health Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced that individuals testing positive for Covid-19 in the state will be required to undergo a week of home quarantine. This decision followed the identification of 36 cases of the JN.1 variant of the virus in the state, as reported by the Technical Advisory Committee. Currently, there are 436 active Covid-19 cases, with those testing positive placed under home isolation and closely monitored by health officials.

Minister Rao emphasized the importance of individuals with Covid-19 staying home for a week and issued orders for both government and private organizations to grant leave to affected individuals unable to go to work due to the virus. Despite the overall increase in Covid-19 cases, Rao reported only seven deaths in the state, three of which were confirmed cases of the JN.1 variant.

Out of 60 samples sent for genome sequencing, 34 were identified as the JN.1 variant, along with another variant, JN.1.1. Minister Rao reassured the public, stating that while the variant is new, there is no need for panic, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified it as a variant of interest without indicating it is dangerous.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered an inspection of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in the state and emphasized the availability of oxygen supply and Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) to prevent shortages.

Of the 436 positive cases, approximately 400 are in home isolation, and seven are in ICUs. The state government is securing additional resources, including the procurement of four oxygen containers and requesting 30,000 additional precautionary vaccines from the central government.

In the latest health bulletin, Karnataka reported 74 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths with comorbidities. Notably, 34 cases of the JN.1 variant were detected, with Bengaluru city reporting the highest number.

Despite the rise in cases, Minister Rao assured that there would be no restrictions on New Year celebrations in Bengaluru and other parts of the state, urging the public to take necessary precautions in crowded places. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar echoed this sentiment, stating that while people need to be careful, there is no need to panic, and business activities will continue without restrictions.

In response to the surging COVID-19 cases and the emergence of the new JN.1 strain, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya took a proactive stance, chairing a meeting with state health officials. Despite the progress made in combating the pandemic, Mandaviya emphasized that COVID-19 is far from over, urging states to remain vigilant and responsive to emerging challenges.

The JN.1 strain, a new sub-variant, has recently come under scrutiny, prompting the Health Ministry to issue statements and guidelines to address the situation. While the variant is currently under intense scientific examination, the ministry clarified that it does not pose an immediate cause for concern. According to their statement, there has been no observed clustering of cases in India due to JN.1. Furthermore, all reported cases were mild, and patients have successfully recovered without complications.

On the global front, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a “variant of interest.” However, current evidence suggests that the risk to public health is low. This classification underscores the importance of continued monitoring and scientific investigation into the nature of the variant.

Sudhansh Pant, the Secretary of the Union Health Ministry, provided additional insights during the meeting. While noting that active COVID-19 cases in India are significantly lower compared to the global scenario, he highlighted a concerning trend: a steep rise in active cases over the last two weeks, from 115 on December 6, 2023, to 614 on December 20. However, it’s worth noting that 92.8% of these cases are home-isolated, indicating a mild form of the illness.

Importantly, the Health Ministry emphasized that no significant increase in hospitalization rates has been observed due to COVID-19. Cases that do require hospitalization are often incidental findings during medical treatment for other conditions. Despite this, a rise in the daily positivity rate has been noted in certain states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Karnataka.

In light of these developments, Mandaviya stressed the need for collective efforts between the central government and the states. He called for the strengthening of surveillance systems for whole-genome sequencing of positive case samples. This initiative is vital for tracking emerging variants through the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), ensuring the timely detection of newer strains circulating in the country.

The Union Health Minister also urged states and Union Territories to ramp up testing efforts. This includes referring a substantial number of samples from COVID-19 positive cases and pneumonia-like illnesses to INSACOG Genome Sequencing Laboratories (IGSLs) on a daily basis. This heightened testing and sequencing strategy will aid in tracking and understanding any new variants that may emerge.

In addition to these measures, Mandaviya called for heightened vigilance and preparation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an adequate stock of essential medical resources, including medicines, oxygen cylinders and concentrators, ventilators, and vaccines. This proactive approach aims to ensure that states are well-equipped to manage any potential surge in COVID-19 cases and to respond effectively to the evolving situation.

In conclusion, as the world grapples with the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and the emergence of new variants, the Indian government, led by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, underscores the significance of collective action, surveillance, and preparedness. By staying alert and leveraging the scientific expertise of institutions like INSACOG, India aims to navigate these uncertain times and protect the health and well-being of its citizens.

All the countries of the world including India have seen the hard times of Corona. While the wounds of corona virus have not healed yet, a new virus has appeared in the country and the name of this virus is H3N2. This virus is spreading fast. So far 90 people have been infected with this virus in the country, while 6 patients have died of H3N2 in Karnataka and Haryana. Not only that, a woman from Surat’s Kapodra is suspected to have died of this virus, whose samples have been sent to the lab. Lab tests will confirm whether the woman died due to H3N2.

After Corona now the terror of H3N2 virus i.e. influenza virus is spreading. So far 6 people have died in the country due to H3N2 virus. The deaths have been confirmed in Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana. Children and the elderly are becoming more victims of the virus. There has been an increase in H3N2 cases since December 15.

The ICMR has also reported that more than half of people suffering from the acute respiratory infection SARI have received the H3N2 virus. The H3N2 virus is a type of influenza virus also called influenza A virus. It is a respiratory viral infection that causes diseases every year.

Influenza is a subtype of virus that was discovered in 1968. If your immune system is weak and already have asthma and heart patients. So there is a risk of getting the H3N2 virus. Due to this virus in the state, the demand for antibiotics and anti-allergic drugs has increased by 30 percent.

According to doctors, most of the influenza patients have similar symptoms. Like cough, throat infection, body ache, runny nose. So Corona has raised its head again in Gujarat. In the last 24 hours, 30 new cases have been reported in Gujarat and the total number has reached 136 in which one patient has also died in Surat. A 60-year-old man living in Surat’s Kapodra area was admitted to Smeer on March 4 after suffering from symptoms of corona. Where the woman died on Thursday morning after the report came positive on Wednesday. So Ahmedabadites also need to be careful as the cases of cold and cough are continuously increasing in the city. An average of more than 3500 patients are receiving treatment in the civil hospital every day.

What exactly is influenza H3N2?

This virus is also similar to Corona, which spreads infection quickly. Due to which the number of patients admitted to the hospital is increasing. H3N2 influenza is also known as Hong Kong flu. This flu is a subtype of influenza A virus.

What are the symptoms of H3N2 virus?

Due to this flu, the patient suffers from respiratory illness.
The symptoms of other seasonal influenza viruses and the symptoms of H3N2 flu are similar. Especially among the main symptoms of this flu

Fever

Sore throat

Body aches

A runny nose is the main symptom.

This is a virus that automatically changes its characteristics, which is called antigenic drift. This is a serious disease and precautions should be taken. Corona cases have reduced in the country, but flu cases are increasing.
The H3N2 influenza virus is a type of contagious flu. If a person gets the flu and comes in contact with another person, they can also get the flu.

What are the precautions?

So it is necessary to maintain social distance and this flu can also spread through breathing. For this reason, it is especially important to cover the mouth when sneezing. If you get this flu, stay at home for 24 hours after the fever subsides. So that this disease can be stopped from spreading to other people as well.

Since the symptoms of this virus are also similar to Corona, it is necessary to adopt the same SOP as Corona to avoid it.

Corona vaccine is the only weapon against Corona in the world. Many people are afraid to take the vaccine. So many people are becoming aware about corona vaccine. Then a strange case has come up in New Zealand.

Here a person has taken corona vaccine 10 times within just 24 hours, after which the health ministry has ordered an investigation. It is believed that for this the person visited several vaccination centers in a single day and was paid for each dose.

The Ministry of Health says that this matter is worrying. If you know someone who has overdosed on the vaccine, advise them to see a doctor as soon as possible. The ministry, however, did not confirm where the vaccination incident took place. The Director of Vaccination Advisory Center said that we do not yet have any study on what kind of side effects can occur after taking so many doses at once. This person has put himself in danger.
