However, Jawhar Sircar expressed concern over what he perceives as the “saffronization” of a state-run broadcaster. He likened the transformation to a shift from Prasar Bharati to “Prachar Bharati” (publicity broadcaster), suggesting a departure from its original ethos.

Interestingly, when Doordarshan was inaugurated in 1959, it sported a saffron logo. Over time, the colors evolved to blue, yellow, and red, although the basic design of two petals around a globe remained consistent.

Notably, the iconic phrase “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” once adorned the logo but was eventually phased out.

This controversy coincides with other recent initiatives by the government concerning DD News, such as the mandate for news anchors to wear Khadi outfits. This move aligns with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Prasar Bharati and Khadi India, highlighting a commitment to promote India’s cultural heritage and modernity through the attire of DD News anchors.

In addition, DD has announced plans to telecast daily morning prayers offered to the Ram Lalla idol, further reflecting a blend of cultural and religious programming on a public service broadcaster.
