Rakesh Tikait, a prominent figure in the 2020/21 protests against the government’s controversial farm laws, has thrown his support behind the second ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, which commenced with clashes between farmers and police at the Punjab-Haryana border. Tikait, the head of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), issued a warning to the ruling BJP, stating that if the government creates problems for the marching farmers, they are not far from them.

The BKU, an Uttar Pradesh-based organization founded by former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, is one of the larger farmer federations in the country. Tikait’s brother, Naresh Tikait, who serves as the National President of the BKU, has urged the government to engage in talks with the farmers, emphasizing the need to give respect to their demands.

Rakesh Tikait had previously called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on February 16 to press for farmers’ demands. In June of the previous year, he had also threatened a larger agitation than the ones against the now-repealed farm laws if the demand for a legal guarantee on minimum support prices was not addressed.

The recent violence at the Punjab-Haryana border marked the first signs of escalation, with tear gas fired at the farmers as they began their push towards Delhi. Approximately two dozen shells were fired, despite no immediate signs of provocation. The situation adds to the challenges faced by the government, scrambling to contain protests that have erupted just weeks before a general election.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) horticulture department is gearing up to expand its fleet of tree ambulances in the capital, aiming to triple the number to 12 by 2024—one for each of its 12 administrative zones. These tree ambulances, introduced in compliance with Delhi high court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders, have already made a significant impact. In the past year, the fleet of four ambulances carried out 353 surgeries, breathing new life into hollow and infected trees.

The initiative was prompted by the high court’s directive in May 2022, instructing various Delhi corporations and land-owning agencies to establish a tree diseases surgery unit, acquire tree ambulances, and assign specialized arborists for tree care. While the ambulances have been deployed, the establishment of the surgery unit is still pending.

Tree ambulances respond to complaints about pest-infested, hollow, or drying trees. The surgery process involves a meticulous two-to-three-year procedure, including removing infected or hollowed parts, cleaning, washing, and applying insecticides. The hollowed-out sections are filled with inert foam, covered with chicken mesh, and layered with plaster of Paris and cement for weather resistance.

This forward-looking approach aligns with the Greening Guidelines of 2000, emphasizing the need for corporations and land-owning agencies to have both a tree diseases surgery unit and a tree ambulance. The MCD’s expansion of its fleet reflects a commitment to preserving and rejuvenating the city’s greenery. 🌳🚑 #TreeAmbulance #GreenInitiative #DelhiEnvironment

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2022, Delhi reported the highest rate of FIRs related to crimes against women, with 14,247 cases and a rate of 144.4 per lakh, significantly surpassing the national average of 66.4. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh collectively accounted for 50 percent of the total cases in the country. Twelve states and union territories, including Haryana, Telangana, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh, recorded crime rates higher than the national average.

India registered 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women in 2022, translating to an alarming rate of 51 FIRs per hour. The majority of offenses under the Indian Penal Code were related to cruelty by the husband or his relatives (31.4 percent), followed by kidnapping and abduction of women (19.2 percent), assault with intent to outrage modesty (18.7 percent), and rape (7.1 percent).

The NCRB highlighted that the increase in the rate of FIRs doesn’t necessarily indicate a rise in actual crimes but may signify more people coming forward to report incidents. The bureau also noted that certain citizen-centric police initiatives, such as the launch of e-FIR facilities or women helpdesks, could contribute to changes in crime reporting numbers. The NCRB emphasized the need for a professional investigation into underlying factors to address local community issues effectively.

A shocking incident in Delhi’s Welcome colony has left residents in disbelief after CCTV footage captured a 16-year-old boy stabbing another teenager to death. The distressing video reveals a gruesome sequence of events as the allegedly intoxicated teenager first strangles the victim and then proceeds to stab him 55 times with a small knife, ultimately dragging the lifeless body to an alley.

According to Delhi Police, the fatal altercation between the two teenagers erupted over a dispute regarding money for biryani. The accused, who reportedly had no prior acquaintance with the victim, approached him and demanded money for biryani. When the 17-year-old refused to comply, the accused strangled him until he lost consciousness. Subsequently, he retrieved a small knife from his pocket and brutally stabbed the victim 55 times, resulting in his tragic death.

The 2.50-minute CCTV footage also captures the assailant threatening others in the vicinity. In a disturbing display, he is seen breaking into a dance after the frenzied stabbing incident.

An investigator involved in the case shared with news agency PTI, “We were also taken aback… the accused, after the entire act, holds the lifeless body by the hair and drags him back to the same narrow area. He robbed ₹350 from the victim and fled. We have already apprehended the accused, who had confessed, and the weapon of murder has been recovered.” The article concludes on the grim note that this heinous crime has not only shocked the local community but has also led to the apprehension of the accused, who has confessed to the crime, and recovery of the murder weapon.

The Indian government summoned the Canadian High Commissioner in New Delhi over the demonstration by Khalistani supporters outside the Indian Consulate in Canada. External Affairs Ministry asked – How did the protesters reach the mission building if there was police security? India has strongly objected to this negligence.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the Indian government has sought a response from Canada. We have asked how Khalistan supporters reached our diplomatic missions and consulates despite police presence. We hope that the Government of Canada will take the necessary steps to protect our diplomats and missions.

India has reminded Canada of the Vienna Convention,
Bagchi said, adding that we have reminded the Government of Canada of its obligations under the Vienna Convention. We have asked them to arrest and prosecute those persons who are already involved in such activities. We expect the Government of Canada to live up to its responsibility.

The program was canceled on March 19.
In fact, on March 19, Khalistani supporters demonstrated outside the Indian mission in Canada. Due to which the Indian High Commission had to cancel one of its events. The event was organized at Surrey’s Taj Park Convention Center to honor Indian Ambassador to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma. An Indian-origin journalist was also attacked by Khalistan supporters during the protest.

Journalist misbehaved during protest in Washington
On the other hand, Indian journalist Lalit Jha, who was covering the pro-Khalistan demonstration in Washington, was also misbehaved on Saturday. Jha also shared a video of the entire incident on Twitter, in which Khalistan supporters are seen abusing the Indian government. Jha said that Khalistan supporters also hit him with two sticks on his left ear.
