The Indian middle class, often hailed as the backbone of the nation’s consumption-driven growth story, is quietly grappling with a profound crisis. A recent viral LinkedIn post by Ashish Singhal, CEO of PeepalCo, has ignited a much-needed conversation, exposing the widening chasm between stagnant salaries and rapidly escalating living costs. This isn’t a sudden collapse, but as Singhal aptly puts it, a “well-dressed decline.”

The Stark Reality: Numbers Don’t Lie

In the last ten years, a considerable portion of the Indian middle class, defined as those with annual incomes ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹1 crore, has experienced a meagre Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of just 0.4% in their earnings. In sharp contrast, the cost of essential goods has escalated significantly. For example, food prices have soared by almost 80% during this timeframe, effectively reducing purchasing power by half. This troubling situation indicates that although families may still afford vacations, upgrade their mobile devices, and meet their equated monthly instalments (EMIs), they frequently do so at the expense of vital savings, insurance, and even postponing medical appointments.

The Illusion of Prosperity

The aspirational lifestyle often associated with the Indian middle class is increasingly funded by credit rather than genuine income growth. Credit card usage is up, and EMIs are ballooning, creating a precarious financial tightrope. This silent struggle is often masked by outward appearances, making it a “scam no one talks about”, as Singhal rightly points out.

Why the Squeeze?

Several factors contribute to this growing crisis:

Stagnant Wage Growth: Despite overall economic growth, middle-class salaries have not kept pace with inflation, severely impacting their real earning power.
Soaring Cost of Living: Housing, education, healthcare, and daily essentials continue to rise at an alarming rate, consuming a larger share of household budgets.
Insufficient Social Security: Unlike the poor, who benefit from various welfare schemes, or the rich, who scale through investments, the middle class often lacks adequate government support or safety nets to absorb economic shocks.

Automation and AI: The increasing prevalence of automation and artificial intelligence is beginning to disrupt white-collar jobs, adding another layer of insecurity to an already strained demographic.
Debt Burden: To maintain desired lifestyles, many middle-class households resort to consumer loans and credit card debt, further increasing their financial vulnerability.
The Broader Implications

This silent squeeze on the middle class is not merely a personal financial struggle; it has significant macroeconomic implications. The middle class is a critical driver of consumption and tax revenue. A financially distressed middle class can lead to reduced spending power, slower retail growth, and ultimately, temper the nation’s GDP performance.

While projections suggest India’s middle class will grow significantly in numbers (from 31% in 2021 to an estimated 60% by 2047), the erosion of their financial well-being is a sobering truth that needs urgent attention.

Addressing India’s middle-class salary crisis requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes:

Policy Focus: Governments need to recognise the unique challenges faced by this segment and implement policies that offer tangible relief, such as tax benefits, affordable housing initiatives, and strengthened labour market policies.

Wage Reforms: Encouraging wage growth that outpaces inflation is crucial to ensure real income gains for the middle class.

Financial Literacy and Planning: Empowering individuals with better financial literacy can help them navigate the economic landscape and make informed decisions about savings and investments.
Investment in Skill Development: As technology evolves, continuous upskilling and reskilling programs are essential to ensure the middle class remains competitive in the job market.
The Indian middle class is resilient, but their silent suffering cannot be ignored. It’s time for a collective effort from policymakers, industries, and individuals to acknowledge this crisis and work towards a more financially secure future for the very segment that powers India’s economic engine.

The police said that one of them, Venkatesh Narasaiya Alluri (26), is a YouTuber, and the other, Lukman Mohammad Shafi Sheikh (28), claims to be a businessman. The Mumbai Police have filed separate cases against them both. The police said the two men came from Andhra Pradesh to attend the wedding. The police released them after giving them a notice and taking legal action in both cases. The grand wedding was also attended by global celebrities, business tycoons, and politicians.

High Profile Celebrities and Politicians

Prime Minister Narendra Modi blessed the newlywed couple Anant and Radhika on Saturday. Modi went to the Ambani family-owned Jio World Convention Centre for a wedding reception called ‘Shubh Aashirwad’.

From Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and others attended the grand wedding, which many called the “wedding of the year.”

Rajinikanth also attended with his wife Lata, daughter Soudarya, son-in-law Vishagan Vanangamudi, and grandson Veer. The Tamil actor, dressed in traditional Tamil clothes, danced to beats with Ranveer and Anil Kapoor, while the groom Anant tried to join in.

Hollywood actor and former wrestler John Cena also danced to the ‘dhol’ beats. Dressed in a powder blue kurta and white pants, John Cena delighted the Indian media from his WWE days by doing his famous gesture “You can’t see me” while dancing with other guests.

Former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson, and Saudi Aramco CEO Amin H Nasser were also guests.

Politicians who attended the wedding included Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, his wife Dimple, and Shiv Sena head Uddhav Thackeray.

The three-day Ambani wedding is the last event in a series of parties the family has hosted since March. The pre-wedding celebrations began in Jamnagar, Gujarat, featuring performances by star Rihanna and top Bollywood celebrities.

Heavy rains caused waterlogging in parts of Mumbai on July 8. Commuters had trouble getting through the flooded streets.
Parked cars were submerged in the rainwater. Mumbai commuters walked through knee-deep water that partly covered vehicles in many areas. At the same time, traffic jammed the city’s Eastern and Western Express highways. Water on the tracks made railway authorities cancel some long-distance trains.
TV images showed some passenger trains stopped on flooded tracks and some commuters walking on tracks to reach their destination.
Just 10 days after heavy rain in New Delhi caused an airport roof to collapse and kill people, Monday’s rains in Mumbai also affected air travel.
Airport authorities had to stop runway operations for over an hour late after midnight.

Karnataka: Red Alerts and School Closures
In Karnataka, the Dakshina Kannada district administration gave a ‘red alert’ for Tuesday, as the weather department expects heavy rain.
Schools and colleges will stay closed on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall continues in parts of Mangaluru. An orange alert was given for the district.
The local administration declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Mangaluru.

Delhi’s Sudden Downpour
A sudden downpour in Delhi surprised citizens and caused heavy waterlogging and traffic jams on Tuesday. The public works department in the city got 22 calls about waterlogging
and three to four complaints about trees falling over by the afternoon. SpiceJet said all departures and arrivals, and their related flights might be affected by the bad weather and asked passengers to check their flight status.

Northeast Monsoon
An active monsoon period and cyclonic activities in northeast Assam will likely bring heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy downpours over northern West Bengal until Thursday, the weather department said. Other places in northern West Bengal that had very high rainfall during this time were Sevoke (170 mm), Buxaduar (150 mm), Nagrakata (140 mm), Jalpaiguri town (130 mm), and Bhutanghat (120 mm).

More than 2 million people have been affected by flooding in northeastern Assam. The Kaziranga National Park, home to the one-horned rhinoceros, was flooded, and six rhinos drowned, authorities said on Sunday.
State authorities said 66 people have died in floods and rain-related incidents since May.

Flooding has also affected 31 villages in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, on the Nepal border, the state government said.

Meteorologists attribute the hot temperatures to a cyclonic circulation over Central Maharashtra, causing easterly winds to flow into Mumbai. This pattern is expected to persist, keeping temperatures between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius until at least Wednesday.

While Mumbai and its neighboring districts are facing intense heat, IMD has indicated the possibility of light rain and thunderstorm activity in Thane and Palghar. The warning was issued due to forecasted cloud formation in these areas.

The sudden spike in temperatures serves as a prelude to a potentially hotter summer ahead, urging residents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to combat the heat.
