This abrupt decision sparked anger and frustration among students who had geared up for the exam. However, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, president of NBEMS, clarified that the postponement was not due to any reported paper leak or technical issue. Rather, it was a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the robustness and integrity of the exam process.

Dr. Sheth explained that amidst the backdrop of several cancellations and postponements of exams by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and a heightened environment of exam-related tension in the country, concerns about potential vulnerabilities arose. He highlighted the unfortunate reality of opportunistic individuals preying on vulnerable students during such times, promising exam success for a fee. This situation often leads to financial exploitation of students, with no guarantee of exam performance.

The decision to postpone NEET PG 2024 was therefore driven by a desire to safeguard students from such fraudulent activities. Dr. Sheth emphasized that the government’s principle of “better safe than sorry” guided the decision-making process. Despite acknowledging the inconvenience caused to students, he reiterated that the Ministry’s priority was to protect the exam’s integrity and ensure fairness in the evaluation process.

Looking forward, Dr. Sheth assured that NBEMS would work towards rescheduling the exam with enhanced security measures to prevent any potential exploitation of exam vulnerabilities. He also touched upon broader issues in medical education, including plans for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) and the pressing need for increasing medical seats in India.

Role of the NTA:

The NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts the NEET-UG exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions across the India.

The court decided not to stop the admissions counselling process. If any of the 1,563 candidates choose not to take the retest, their original marks (without the extra marks) will be used for their results.
The results of the re-test will be announced on June 30, and the government said that counselling for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other courses will begin on July 6.

Allegations Over Perfect Scores

A record 67 students scored a perfect 720, which has never happened before. Six of these students are from a centre in Faridabad, Haryana, raising concerns about possible cheating also they were from the same coaching centre.

Student Protests

On June 10, many students protested in Delhi, demanding an investigation into the alleged cheating. It has also been claimed that the grace marks contributed to these 67 students getting the top rank.
Petitioners from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh said that there was “no clear reason” for the grace marks.
They pointed out that some students received “statistically impossible” scores, including perfect scores of 720 out of 720.

The Supreme Court announced that all petitions, including those asking for the cancellation of NEET-UG 2024
due to the allegations of irregularities, will be reviewed on July 8.

The number of suicides in Kota has reached the highest count in a calendar year since 2015. The gravity of the situation is evident, with 15 aspirants succumbing to suicide in 2022 alone. The previous years witnessed similarly distressing figures: 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, seven in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 in 2015.

In response to the alarming rise in suicides, the Rajasthan government took steps to address the issue. In August 2023, a 15-member committee, headed by higher education secretary Bhawani Singh Detha, was formed. Based on their recommendations, the government implemented preventive measures, including mandatory screening tests, organizing sections in alphabetical order rather than by ranks, and establishing monitoring centers in coaching hubs like Kota and Sikar.

The tragic incident on Monday was the first recorded since the state government issued these guidelines on September 28. The previous case occurred on September 19 when a 16-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh died by consuming poison.

The reasons behind the distressing trend of student suicides in Kota are multifaceted. The intense competition, demanding schedules, extreme academic pressure, parental expectations, and homesickness contribute to a challenging environment for aspiring students. Interviews with students in Kota reveal a sense of isolation, with many feeling there is no one to talk to or share their feelings.

The competitive atmosphere in Kota is described as akin to running on a treadmill, where students feel compelled to keep up the pace without the option to slow down or take a break. Many children arrive in Kota at a very young age, sometimes as early as 15, and must quickly adapt to an intensely competitive environment where they may find themselves alongside more skilled peers.

Experts also point out the role of coaching centers in creating unnecessary pressure on students. Celebrations of toppers are said to contribute to an unhealthy competition and added stress for those who may not perform as well in entrance exams.

The tragic loss of young lives in Kota underscores the need for comprehensive measures to address the mental health challenges faced by students pursuing competitive exams. While the government’s initiatives aim to curb such tragedies, ongoing efforts are essential to create a supportive and nurturing educational environment that prioritizes the well-being of students.
