The taboo of “hygienic vagina” is one thing that remains constant despite our love-hate relationship. In a society where discussing a body part is still deemed “vulgar,” how can we expect people to be open about discussing hygiene of vagina?

Despite having a body part since birth, around 90% of Indian women are not aware of certain facts about their vagina.

Vaginal spot needs no intimate washes. Yes, how many of us know that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ? Every vaginal lightning-brightening product in the market is nothing more than a scam. Through regular white discharge, a healthy vagina not only keeps itself clean but also balances the good and bad bacteria in that spot.

When it comes to cleaning. it’s crucial to remember that different cleaning products contain chemicals, and that an abundance of wetness can serve as a habitat for harmful bacteria. 

Your vulvas don’t need any cosmetic cleaning aid, the use of plain water for intimate areas is considered the best. The use of products disrupts the normal PH balance of vaginal flora, which may lead to the vaginal infection and diseases.
There’s nothing wrong with being dark. More presence of melanin (a substance produced by the body that creates pigmentation to the skin) makes the intimate areas darker than other body parts. However dark doesn’t mean unhygienic or dirtier,  we need to understand that ‘clean’ does not mean ‘light skin’.

These playful comments could motivate women to speak up for their choices in politics. Women-friendly policies introduced by Kejriwal have long been viewed as populist initiatives. 

Kejriwal connected the voting options to his government’s successful initiatives, which include free bus tickets, free energy, and the recently announced “Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana” scheme, which will provide Rs 1,000 to women under the age of 18. 

He asked women to question their husbands. “Tell them, Kejriwal has made your electricity free, bus tickets free, and now he is giving Rs 1,000 to women. What has the BJP done for them? Then why vote for BJP?” 

His speech touched on the unquestionable power of women in their homes and the need to acknowledge and value their opinions when making decisions related to politics. It helps us imagine a day in the future when people can view women as equally capable and accountable for making political decisions.

C) I realized that having a romantic partner isn’t required to live a happy and fulfilled life.

All of them are the words of women who chose to be single at and above 30.

“Truthfully speaking… I love my time to myself… At 41 I just don’t have the patience to want to date… and I’m happy with that.” – a statement of one woman who chose to be happy without a partner. 

Unimpressed With What’s Out There

Another woman who chose freedom over relationships at 40 said- “At this point, I am single by choice because I am not impressed with what is out there. I can be enough for myself, have sex regularly, and do whatever I want to without someone else to worry about. I have dated extensively and it meant me having to negotiate my schedule, rarely have sex, and enough things I lost interest in”.

These answers prove that being single and focusing on yourself is better than being stuck with the wrong people!

“She isn’t a virgin, that turned me off!” 

“I didn’t bleed while having it for the first time, what will he think of me?”

These are some of the widespread thoughts that men and many a time women go through after their 1st intercourse. One thing that lies in common is the ‘constant judgment over the blood shed during her first sexual encounter!’

What if she doesn’t bleed? Does that make her impure? Or is she not trustworthy?

In a time where sex before marriage is commonplace, then why is a non-bleeding hymen not normalized? 

Let us first address what a hymen is. 

Hymen is a thin piece of tissue located at the opening of the vagina. A tissue which allows menstrual blood and normal secretions to exit the vagina. 

Hymen naturally has a hole big enough for period blood to come out. But some are born with little hymenal tissue so it seems like they don’t have a hymen at all. Ideally, It is stretched open during the first vaginal sex, which might cause some pain or bleeding. 

But this isn’t the case with everyone, making some uninformed people think that their partner has already lost their virginity or is lying about it. Why being a virgin is such a badge of honor is a topic for another day.

And there are other ways that a hymen can be stretched open: riding a bike, doing sports, or putting something in your vagina (like a tampon, finger, or a sex toy). Once your hymen is stretched open, it doesn’t grow back.

Renowned Mythologist and storyteller Seema Anand recently addressed this issue over her social media handle and asked all the Vagaina owners to own what they have and just not deal with the so-called “Gentlemen.”

Having said that, it’s always recommended to use ice-cold water to wash the genital area, and to avoid sexual intercourse after the painful process of tearing of the hymen. 

It’s essentially about asserting ownership over your body: my vagina, my rules – men need permission before entry!
