The taboo of “hygienic vagina” is one thing that remains constant despite our love-hate relationship. In a society where discussing a body part is still deemed “vulgar,” how can we expect people to be open about discussing hygiene of vagina?

Despite having a body part since birth, around 90% of Indian women are not aware of certain facts about their vagina.

Vaginal spot needs no intimate washes. Yes, how many of us know that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ? Every vaginal lightning-brightening product in the market is nothing more than a scam. Through regular white discharge, a healthy vagina not only keeps itself clean but also balances the good and bad bacteria in that spot.

When it comes to cleaning. it’s crucial to remember that different cleaning products contain chemicals, and that an abundance of wetness can serve as a habitat for harmful bacteria. 

Your vulvas don’t need any cosmetic cleaning aid, the use of plain water for intimate areas is considered the best. The use of products disrupts the normal PH balance of vaginal flora, which may lead to the vaginal infection and diseases.
There’s nothing wrong with being dark. More presence of melanin (a substance produced by the body that creates pigmentation to the skin) makes the intimate areas darker than other body parts. However dark doesn’t mean unhygienic or dirtier,  we need to understand that ‘clean’ does not mean ‘light skin’.

The Bombay High Court also stated,” For obvious reasons, there cannot be a straight jacket formula applicable to all and the quantum will differ according to the facts of each case. In my view, while determining the quantum of compensation, one of the factors which can be considered is the impact of the acts of domestic violence on the aggrieved person.”

Justice Sharmila upheld the trial court’s decision, which was based on a case that involved ongoing acts of domestic violence from 1994 to 2017. The single bench judge, while affirming the trial court’s judgment, stated that compensation should be paid for injuries caused by the accused’s actions, including mental anguish and emotional suffering.

By implementing this, the Bombay High Court sends a clear message about the enormity of such crimes. It is critical to acknowledge the severity of these occurrences. It has the potential to touch everyone and make them aware that such actions will not be taken for granted shortly.

Above all, it is critical to understand that a person’s home should be the safest place for them.

“She isn’t a virgin, that turned me off!” 

“I didn’t bleed while having it for the first time, what will he think of me?”

These are some of the widespread thoughts that men and many a time women go through after their 1st intercourse. One thing that lies in common is the ‘constant judgment over the blood shed during her first sexual encounter!’

What if she doesn’t bleed? Does that make her impure? Or is she not trustworthy?

In a time where sex before marriage is commonplace, then why is a non-bleeding hymen not normalized? 

Let us first address what a hymen is. 

Hymen is a thin piece of tissue located at the opening of the vagina. A tissue which allows menstrual blood and normal secretions to exit the vagina. 

Hymen naturally has a hole big enough for period blood to come out. But some are born with little hymenal tissue so it seems like they don’t have a hymen at all. Ideally, It is stretched open during the first vaginal sex, which might cause some pain or bleeding. 

But this isn’t the case with everyone, making some uninformed people think that their partner has already lost their virginity or is lying about it. Why being a virgin is such a badge of honor is a topic for another day.

And there are other ways that a hymen can be stretched open: riding a bike, doing sports, or putting something in your vagina (like a tampon, finger, or a sex toy). Once your hymen is stretched open, it doesn’t grow back.

Renowned Mythologist and storyteller Seema Anand recently addressed this issue over her social media handle and asked all the Vagaina owners to own what they have and just not deal with the so-called “Gentlemen.”

Having said that, it’s always recommended to use ice-cold water to wash the genital area, and to avoid sexual intercourse after the painful process of tearing of the hymen. 

It’s essentially about asserting ownership over your body: my vagina, my rules – men need permission before entry!

Women above the age of 60 who have battled with chronic obesity half their life are at the highest risk of breast cancer. Genes too, have a part to play. However, despite the risks, women either young or old, fail to understand that they can all develop breast cancer at any stage of their lives.

The only way to survive is early detection. The only 2 best breast cancer screening procedures that are recommended by oncologists include Mammogram and MRI. These tests can nab breast cancer while it’s still new. You might also want to be careful about the following symptoms that might be the signs of cancer’s onset.

• Painful Breasts – Breast pain close to periods is quite normal. But, if you start experiencing acute pain randomly at any time of the month, and especially if the pain is persistent, you might want to consult a doctor.
• Swelling or Lumps – Do not ignore the presence of lumps anywhere in the breasts. In fact, lumps without pain are more of an indication of cancer than the painful ones.
• Nipple Retraction – It is the first visible sign that shouldn’t be ignored. If your nipples develop an inward pull, it might be an indication of breast cancer.
• Nipple Discharge – It calls for an immediate screening if the nipples start oozing discharge (except for milk in lactating mothers).

That being said, breast cancer, like any other cancer, is a silent killer. So, do not wait for the symptoms to show up because they might never. Discuss your concerns with your doctor, share the details if your family has had a history of cancer of any kind. The doctor will then suggest the screening that would be either Mammogram or MRI.

What Are These Tests?

Mammogram test or breast X-ray is the only available option that can detect breast cancer at its onset and increase the survival chances.

MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses magnetic waves and radio waves to screen the breasts and identify whether you have breast cancer or not.

Once you’re identified with breast cancer, the course of treatment would depend upon the stage and the type of cancer. The ones that are widely used are listed below.

• Surgery – Non-malignant cancer or cancer at its early stage can be operated. Doctors surgically remove the cancerous cells and tissues before they can spread.
• Chemotherapy – Chemo is the procedure of shrinking, even better killing, cancer cells to hamper their spread.
• Hormone Therapy – Breast cancer is one of the few cancer types that can be treated with hormone therapy. The body is kept deprived of the hormones that cancer needs to grow and expand.

Other than these, there are 2 more therapies for breast cancer treatment – radiation therapy and biological therapy.

On a closing note, prevention from breast cancer begins with self-examination. If you know how your breasts feel under normal circumstances, then you’ll be able to spot even a minor change that can help in an early diagnosis.
