Hina Khan, a well-known television actress, announced in the early hours of June 28, 2024, that she had been diagnosed with the third stage of breast cancer. Just after sharing her health updates on social media, the whole Bollywood world sent their best wishes and concern for the actress.
The question here is- How did she not know about it untill it was too late?
According to a recent survey, 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer, with 6,70,000 deaths occurring globally. This disorder can affect women all around the world at any age after puberty. In India, one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every four minutes, and one woman dies from it every eight minutes.
Even if it is such a serious health concern for women, why isn’t the world fighting back. Breast cancer affects approximately 99% of women, whereas men account for 0.5-1% of cases. Ageing, alcohol, a family history of breast cancer, reproductive history, tobacco use, and postmenopausal hormone therapy are all risk factors for breast cancer.
Following are some signs and symptoms one can have :
- a breast lump or thickening, often without pain
- change in size, shape or appearance of the breast
- dimpling, redness, pitting or other changes in the skin
- change in nipple appearance
It’s high time to initiate global awareness campaigns that consider women’s health.
