How powerful is Indian passport? Rank slips one spot in 2024

In a recent revelation, the Henley Passport Index for 2024 has showcased an unexpected twist for Indian passport holders. Despite an increase in visa-free access for Indians over the past year, the country has slipped one position, landing at 85th place on the list.

Surprisingly, the Indian passport now provides visa-free access to 62 countries, up from 60 in 2023. This begs the question: Why the decline in ranking? The answer lies in a complex interplay of global diplomatic relations, visa policies, and the Henley Passport Index’s unique methodology.

France has clinched the top spot on the list, while India’s neighbors have experienced mixed fortunes. Pakistan maintains its 106th position from the previous year, while Bangladesh has slipped from 101st to 102nd place. Notably, the Maldives has outperformed India, securing the 58th place, allowing its passport holders visa-free travel to an impressive 96 countries.

The Henley Passport Index, developed through a meticulous analysis of data spanning 19 years, relies on the International Air Transport Association’s specialized data. This comprehensive dataset covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations globally, providing a nuanced understanding of global mobility trends. Updated monthly, the index aims to capture the evolving landscape of international travel.

Intriguingly, the Index reflects a significant shift over the past two decades. In 2006, individuals could travel visa-free to an average of 58 countries. Fast forward to 2024, and that number has nearly doubled to 111 countries. This transformation underscores the changing dynamics of global citizenship and the evolving openness of countries to foreign visitors.

India’s situation raises questions about the complex factors influencing passport rankings. While increased visa-free access might be seen as a positive development, the overall diplomatic climate, geopolitical considerations, and reciprocity agreements all play pivotal roles in determining a passport’s global standing.

As the Henley Passport Index continues to provide insights into the evolving landscape of international travel, it serves as a valuable tool for governments, travelers, and analysts alike. The 2024 rankings offer a snapshot of the intricate dance between nations on the global stage, reminding us that the power and reach of a passport extend far beyond its pages.
