As the mango season kicks off and the markets flood with this beloved fruit, consumers are often left confused about how to differentiate genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes from other varieties, particularly with concerns about counterfeit mangoes from Karnataka. To address this issue, an innovative solution involving QR codes on mangoes has emerged, empowering consumers to easily authenticate the origin and quality of their mangoes.

According to mango traders, over 100 boxes of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes bearing QR codes arrive at the market daily. This technology-driven approach provides consumers with a straightforward method to ensure they are purchasing authentic Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes, renowned for their flavor and quality.

Arvind More, a mango trader at Market Yard, highlights that this technique enables customers to quickly verify the mango’s source area, details of the farmers, and information about the nutrients and fertilizers used, thus providing transparency and accountability in the purchasing process.

Dinesh Sonawane, a consumer, expresses satisfaction with this initiative, emphasizing the challenge of identifying genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes due to the risk of being misled by traders. The QR codes offer reassurance, ensuring that the mangoes purchased are authentic and worth the investment.

Scanning the QR code on these mangoes reveals comprehensive details such as variety name, region, nutritional value, farmer’s name and details, orchard location, packaging and ripening dates, orchard view, farmer’s specialization, and specifics about fertilizers or pesticides used.

Not only do QR codes benefit consumers, but they also support farmers. By clearly indicating the authenticity of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes, more consumers are inclined to purchase from local farmers. This initiative not only safeguards consumer interests but also enhances appreciation for the hard work of these farmers.

Makrand Kane, a farmer from Reel village in Ratnagiri district, underscores the significance of the QR code in ensuring the authenticity of their produce. The QR codes are designed with an expiry date, preventing misuse and ensuring that they are exclusive to Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes, safeguarding both consumers and farmers alike. This method instills confidence in buyers, promotes transparency, and elevates the value of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes in the market.
